Christmas" setzte Mariah Carey neue Maßstäbe
für den Begriff "Weihnachtsalbum". Eine wunderbar gelungene
Mischung aus traditionellen Weihnachtsliedern, Pop-, R&B- und
Gospelelementen. So wurde "Merry Christmas" zu einem der
meistverkauften Weihnachtsalben weltweit, Songs wie "All I Want For
Christmas Is You" und "Miss You Most At Christmas Time" wurden zu
echten Weihnachtsklassikern und werden bis heute jedes Jahr zur
Weihnachtszeit immer wieder gespielt.Das überwiegend von Walter Afanasieff hervorragend produzierte Album glänzt zudem mit einer stimmlich perfekt aufgelegten Mariah Carey. "Merry Christmas" erwies sich als unvergänglicher Klassiker: Im Jahr 2000 wurde "All I Want For Christmas" neu aufgelegt (u.a. als Remix ft JD & Lil' Bow Wow) und dazu ein Zeichentrick-Video gedreht, sowie ein neues Video zu "O Holy Night" aufgenommen. Auch ein Beleg, daß "Merry Christmas" einfach zeitlos schön ist. (Der Song "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" ist übrigens ein Bonustrack auf der internationalen Ausgabe und nicht auf der US-Version). 2005 erschien eine Neuherausgabe von "Merry Christmas" als Doppel-CD mit einer DVD, die zahlreiche Multimedias enthält, darunter auch ein ganz neues Video zu"Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" (Remix). Und das unverwüstliche "All I Want For Christmas Is You" schaffte es 2005 sogar auf Platz 1 der US Hot Digital Singles! SINGLES: Aus "Merry Christmas" wurden 7 Singles ausgekoppelt, "All I Want For Christmas" (1994 in der Originalversion und 2000 als Remix ft. JD & Lil' Bow Wow) und "Joy To The World" als kommerzielle Ausgaben, sowie "Jesus Born On This Day", "O Holy Night" und "Miss You Most At Christmas Time" als Promo-Singles. 2005 kam im Zusammenhang mit dem Re-Release von "Merry Christmas" die Single "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" als Promo in den USA heraus. In Deutschland stieg die Single "All I Want For Christmas" tatsächlich erst 13 Jahre nach ihrem Debüt in die Top 100 ein - zum Jahreswechsel 2007/08 kletterte sie bis auf Platz 18!

Gleich drei Video-Versionen gibt es von "Joy To The World": Ein Mitschnitt vom Charity Concert in der St. John The Divine Cathedral in New York, ein Clip zum "Joy To The World Remix" bestehend aus Zusammenschnitten von Mariah's Reisen durch die Welt sowie eine weitgehend unbekannte Studioversion. Schließlich wurde noch ein Clip zu "Miss You Most At Christmas Time" gedreht. 2005 erschien eine Neuausgabe von "Merry Christmas", die zusätzlich eine Multimedia-DVD enthält, darauf auch ein neues Video zu "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" (Remix), das voll animiert ist und Mariah als Puppentrickfigur zeigt. Besonderheiten: 1. Der "Santa Claus" im Video zu "All I Want For Christmas Is You" ist kein Geringerer als - Tommy Mottola! 2. Das 2000 veröffentlichte Video zu "All I Want For Christmas Is You", ist ein vollständig animiertes Video, das per Zeichentrick eine süße Geschichte erzählt, wie Mariah mit ihren Freunden Weihnachten rettet (Santa Claus hatte verschlafen) und am Ende den Schneemann in ihren Liebsten verwandelt, mit dem sie auf eine sonnige Insel reist... (Der ist dann aber nicht mehr Mottola, sondern Luis Miguel :-))
Album ReviewsIhre Fans werden die getragenen Songs, wie "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" oder das passend gedämpfte "All I Want for Christmas Is you" sicherlich lieben. Doch richtig aufhorchen läßt sie uns bei der schlichten Darbietung einiger traditioneller Weihnachtslieder. An erster Stelle wären "Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child" and "Silent Night" zu nennen. Letzeres gibt sie sehr ruhevoll wieder, ohne der Versuchung zu erliegen, die hohen Töne des Stücks besonders hervorzuheben. Das Album ist ein Muß für überzeugte Fans (zitiert aus Reviews bei amazon)Mit 7 Weihnachtsstandards und 3 Eigenkompositionen stimmt die erfolgreiche Songschreiberin ihre Fangemeinde auf das Fest der Liebe ein. Die 10 Tracks zwischen Gospel, Christams-Pop und hitverdächtiger Weihnachts- balladen sind betörend eingängig produziert. Keine musikalischen Experimente schmälern den Genuß des harmoniesuchenden Konsumenten - 'Merry Christmas' ist wie geschaffen als Soundtrack für die Bescherung." (Musikwoche)

Die Weihnachtssingles erschienen nur in kleinerer Auflage oder als Promos. Hot 100 Chartnotierungen gibt es deshalb keine. Für "All I Want For Christmas" gibt es immerhin eine Notierung auf # 12 der US Hot 100 Airplays. 2005 war der Song zur Weihnachtszeit auch die # 1 der Downloadcharts in den USA. 2006 und 2007 konnte "All I Want For Christmas" erneut Spitzenpositionen bei den Digital- und Holidaycharts einnehmen. Im Dezember 2007 erhilet der Song dafür Platin von der RIAA.
