Mariah Carey Discografie - Album Music Box INFO:
Das Album "Music Box" ist eines der kommerziell erfolgreichsten von
Mariah Carey. Die CD und die daraus ausgekoppelten Singles wurden
weltweit rund 30 Millionen Mal verkauft. Mit diesem Album erlangte
Mariah Carey Weltruhm und stürmte auf den Thron der Soul- und
Pop-Musik. ("Without You" wurde übrigens Mariah's erster - und
bislang einziger - #-1-Hit in Deutschland.)Schon die erste Single, "Dreamlover", wurde ein Riesenhit, die stolze 8 Wochen den 1. Platz in den Billboards belegte und mit Platin ausgezeichnet wurde. Doch zum bekanntesten Song, einer Art "Hymne" aus "Music Box" wurde "Hero", der bis heute als eine Art Maxime für Mariah und ihre Fans gilt - der Titel ist einer von mehreren auf dem Album, der im Teamwork mit dem Erfolgsproduzenten Walter Afanasieff entstand. Auf "Music Box" findet sich auch die erste Kooperation MC's mit Babyface ("Never Forget You"), mit ihm arbeitet Mariah später noch mehrmals zusammen. "Music Box" war DER internationale Durchbruch für Mariah und auch in Deutschland das erfolgreichste Album von Mariah Carey - satte 11 Wochen auf der # 1 (es gab Doppelplatin für "Music Box") und bei den BRAVO Otto Awards 1994 wurde Mariah als beliebteste Sängerin gewählt - mit fast Zweidrittel aller Stimmen! 1993 ging Mariah auf eine "Music Box" Konzert-Tour, erstmals überhaupt. Eine zweischneidige Erfahrung: Die Kritik ging mit der bühnenunerfahrenen Mariah Carey ziemlich unsanft um, aber sie lernte viel und die Fans waren glücklich, sie live zu erleben. SINGLES: Aus dem Album "Music Box" wurden 6 Singles ausgekoppelt, "Dreamlover", "Hero", "Heroe" (erschien nur in Mexiko), "Without You", "Never Forget You" (nur in den USA in kleiner Auflage und als Promo in Australien und Spanien veröffentlicht) sowie "Anytime You Need A Friend".
Nicht aus dem Album "Music Box", sondern aus einer Kooperation mit Luther Vandross stammt die 1994 veröffentlichte Single "Endless Love". Sie gehört aber sicher zum "Music Box"-Abschnitt in der musikalischen Entwicklung von Mariah Carey. Der Song erschien dann 2000 doch noch auf einer Carey CD, auf "Greatest Hits".

Kurioses: Bei Dreh zum "Dreamlover"-Video wollte Mariah nicht ins sehr kalte Wasser, erst als Regisseurin Diane Martel hinein sprang, ließ sich auch MC überreden. Im Remix-Video zu "Anytime You Need A Friend" ist Mariah übrigens mit ihren engsten Freunden und Ehemann Mottola zu sehen. Außerdem erschinen zwei weitere Videos zur Single "Endless Love", einem Duett mit Luther Vandross. Berühmt wurde der großartige Live-Auftritt von Mariah Carey und Luther Vabdross in der Royal Albert Hall in London.
Album ReviewsFan-Review: Wenn ein Album die Klischees über eine Mariah Carey geprägt hat, dann ist es "Music Box"." Schmalziger Rock für Erwachsene", so eine der übelsten Kritiken-ausgerechnet für das Werk, das der Carey endgültig weltweit den Durchbruch brachte und bis heute zu den meistverkauftesten Alben überhaupt zählt - was am Erfolg nicht mehr schlechtgeredet werden konnte, ging jetzt auf die Qualität des Materials über; irgendwas braucht man eben zum "Zerreissen" in den Medien - wenn´s nicht der Erfolg oder das Image sind, dann eben die Musik. Denn "Music Box" hat die harte Abfuhr des "Melody Maker" ganz und gar nicht verdient - sicher, der Hauptbestandteil des Albums sind Balladen, aber dazwischen wuseln auch drei Upbeat-Nummern in Mariahs Music-Box; die erste Single, "Dreamlover" steht am Beginn einer Reihe von typischen 1.-Single- Upbeat-Soulpop-Hits wie "Heartbreaker","Loverboy" oder "Fantasy". Und mit der positiven Songatmosphäre und einer schönen Melodik überzeugt auch gleich der "Prototyp". Völlig andere Töne bietet wohl DIE Mariah-Hymne: Whitney hat ihr "I will always love ou", Celine ihr "My heart will go on"; MC´s "Nationalhymne" und wohl weltweit ihr bekanntester Song berührt mit der klaren Stimme und der klassischen Pianobegleitung: "Heeeero"... Letzte Single des Albums war "Anytime you need a friend" - und dass "schmalziger Rock" total danebengegriffen ist für "Music Box", merkt man spätestens jetzt. Mit überragender Stimme und Gospelchor- Support im Chorus bringt Mariah jeden zum Mitsingen dieses Meisterwerks. Und während noch "Anytime.." in den Gehörgängen klebt, kommt das zarte "Music Box" daher und verzaubert mit ganz eigenem, verspielten Charme. "Now that I know" präsentiert Mariah als "Pop"-sängerin; dass ihr melodische Souleinflüsse auch im Upbeat gut tun, wurde hier leider nicht berücksichtigt - nett, aber... Bitte. "Never forget you" klingt so gar nicht nach einer Babyface-Produktion. Oder hat er Walter Affasieneff etwas zu sehr auf die Regler geschaut? Vom typischen Babyface-Soul merkt man wenig; trotzdem eine schöne Ballade.Wo wir bei bekannten Mariah-Songs sind: In good old Germany war "Without you" MC bisher einziger Nr.-1-Hit. Ironie des Schicksals,dass ausgerechnet der ein Cover ist... Empfehlung zum Hören: Bloß nicht abends bei Kerzenschein und gebrochenen Herzen; dann kandidelt Mariahs Stimme nämlich ein wenig über und wird leicht kitschig. An einem sonnigen Frühlingsmorgen dagegen wird die kühle Kraft der Vocals und das besondere Vibrato im Song deutlich. "Just to hold you once again". Oh, oh - das klingt schon im Vorfeld nach einer melancholisch-depressiven Affasieneff-Verzweiflungs-Ballade. Stimmt nur halb; weniger ist mehr, und so ist diese stille Ballade dann auch ein Highlight des Albums. "I´ve been thinking about you" wird wieder funkig-dancy und überzeugt mehr als "Now that I know": Mustergültiger Be-Happy-Upbeat. Walter, was ist los? Nach "Just to hold you once again" präsentiert uns der König aller Schnulzen einmal mehr eine sparsame, schöne Ballade statt wild-verzweifelten Emotionsausbrüchen. Ich könnte mich dran gewöhnen... auch wenn´s nicht "All I´ve ever wanted" ist... Eine echte Überraschung hält zu guter letzt der Bonustrack bereit: mit sphärishen Klängen verwirrt "Everything fades away" angenehm - eine ganz andere Art Ballade. Definitiv ein Album-Highlight. So, was bleibt vom "schmalzigen Erwachsenen-Rock"? Zum Schmalz kann ich nur sagen, die Herren vom "Melody Maker" sollten die Scheiben nicht immer zu nachtschlafender Stunde testen... Erwachsen bin zumindest ich mit zarten 16 nicht, und Rock hab ich nicht in einem einzigen Song entdecken können... Sorry, aber "Music Box" ist zwar nicht der Musik allerletzter Schluss, aber ein äußerst gut gemachtes, durchaus vielfältigeres Album, als man zunächst meinen mag, und stimmlich sehr schönes Stück Musikgeschichte. 27 Millionen Menschen weltweit werden mir Recht geben.... (BRAVO) Mariah Carey erweist sich auf ihrer neuen CD wieder einmal als Haupt- konkurrentin von Whitney Houston. Wie der Glamourstar des amerikanischen Entertainments setzt auch die hübsche New Yorkerin auf eine sorgfältig ausbalancierte Mischung aus Soul und sanftem Pop, auf Arrangements ohne Ecken und Kanten. Mit etwas Glück entstehen nach diesem Erfolgsrezept Glanzstücke wie das gospelinspirierte Stück Anytime You Need A Friend. Allzuoft bleibt es aber bei musikalischer Dutzendware, wenn auch auf hohem handwerklichem Niveau. (Audio)
