Mariah Carey Discografie - Album Mariah Carey INFO: Das
Debütalbum von Mariah Carey erhielt schlicht den Namen der
Künstlerin, deren unvergleichliche Karriere mit der
Veröffentlichung des Erstlings im Juni 1990 begann.Mariah hatte bereits in den 80er Jahren begonnen, die Songs für dieses Album zu schreiben, das Album entstand vor allem in Zusammenarbeit mit Ben Margulies, der 7 der 11 veröfentlichten Songs mitproduzierte. Als Mariah von Thomas Mottola - dem späteren Präsidenten von Sony Music und für einige Jahre Ehemann von MC - entdeckt wurde, stand Mariah Carey übrigens bereits kurz vor dem Vertragsabschluß mit einer anderen Plattenfirma. Doch mit Mariah Carey hatte Thomas Mottola von Sony Columbia genau jene frische und großartige Sängerin gefunden, die das Label suchte und schnappte sie der Konkurrenz mit einem besserem Angebot weg. Mit einer großen Promotion stieg "Mariah Carey" am 30.6.1990 mit Rang 80 in die Top 100 Billboard ein, wo es nach einem achtmonatigem Siegeszug schließlich auf Platz 1 ankam und die Spitze 11 Wochen lang behaupten konnte. Das Werk brachte Mariah Carey zwei Grammies ein, als "Best New Artist" und "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance". SINGLES: In den USA wurden 4 Singles ausgekoppelt, die alle auf # 1 der Billboard Charts kamen: "Vision Of Love", "Love Takes Time", "Someday" und "I Don't Wanna Cry". Während "I Don't Wanna Cry" nur in den USA und Asien erschien, kam die Single "There's Got To Be A Way" nur in Europa heraus.
REMIXE: Von Beginn an hat Mariah Carey zu vielen ihre Titel Remixe aufgenommen. Die Clips laufen heute nur sehr selten im TV, aber auf dem 1991 veröffentlichten Homevideo "Mariah Carey - The First Vision" kann man sie sehen. Eine ganz besondere Rarität ist das "Directors Cut" Video zu "I Don't Wanna Cry", das 1998(!) zum ersten Mal gezeigt wurde und das im deutschen TV nur ein Mal im MTV Special "Mariah's #1's" zu sehen war. Der Clip zu "There's Got To Be A Way" lief fast nur in Europa, weil die gleichnamige Single in den USA nicht veröffentlicht wurde. Kurios: Im Video zu "Vision Of Love" ist eine Szene zu sehen, in der Mariah mit ihrem Ring im Haar hängen bleibt und ein Strähne dabei ausreißt. Seltsamerweise wurde wurde das Mißgeschick nicht aus dem Clip geschnitten.
Album ReviewsFan-Review: Wir schreiben das Jahr 1990. Die flippigen Achtziger sind gerade vorbei; die First Lady im internationalen Musikgeschäft ist, um gleich zur Sache zu kommen, Whitney Houston. Noch ahnt keiner, dass sie diese Position im neuen Jahrzehnt schneller wieder verlieren sollte, als sie "Butterfly" sagen kann - denn hinter den Kulissen, dem Glamour der Souldiven, Rockgötter und Raplegenden, der Poplolitas und -gigolos, brodelt es: Sony Music unter Musik-Mogul Tommy Mottola hat eine junge Sängerin unter Vertrag genommen und produziert ihr erstes Album... der Name? Kein Geheimnis: Mariah Carey. Die blutjunge New Yorkerin hat ein Geheimnis: ihre wahnsinnige Stimme. Und Mottola lässt sie von der Creme de la Creme der Produzentens herausputzen: Ben Margulies, daneben Walter Affasieneff...und - Maraih singt, im krassen Gegensatz zu allen Dions und Houstons der Musikwelt, was sie selber denkt: Eigenwillig will sie alle Hits sich selbst auf den Leib schneidern.Was gibt es zu sagen? Der Rest ist Musikgeschichte. Im Sommer ´90 erscheint "Mariah Carey" nach lang- wieriger, professioneller Promotionarbeit - und debutiert auf Rang 80 der Billboards. Kein Traumergebnis; aber man warte ab... 8 Monate später steht das selbe Album fast drei Monate an der Spitze, auf Rang 1 derselben Charts. Den Triumph versüßen sämtliche Singles des Longplayers: Sie erreichen allesamt Platz 1 in den Billboard Single Charts... Mariah hat es geschafft - und Whitney muss zittern... Was ist nun das Geheimmrezept dieses gewaltigen Debuterfolges: Erstmal Mariahs frische, aber soulig klingende Megaröhre, mit der sie sich jeder Form von Songwriting anpasst, ganz neue Standards setzt. Und dann natürlich die Songs, in einer köstlichen Bandbreite - viele würden wohl erwarten, dass Debut des "Hero"-Stars sei voll von imposanten Balladen und liegt... daneben. Die Überhand hat frisch produzierter, stimmgewaltiger Popsoul vom Schlage "Prisoner"s, "There´s got to be a way"s - eine wahre Pophymne - oder "All in your mind"s. Eine ordentliche Prise Funk trägt das freche "You need me" bei, von dessen Produktion heute keiner ein mittlerweile mehr als 10jähriges Alter erwarten würde, der wohl experimentellste Song auf der CD. Im Midtempo beweist Mariah dominanten, souveränen Soul, wie auf ihrem Debuthit "Vision of Love", im mitreißenden Uptempo "Someday" nicht minder Stimmgewalt und die absolute Übermacht über alle Beats, Samples und Backgroundchöre, heutzutage eine Erscheinung mit Seltenheitswert.... Aber natürlich gibt es sie auch hier, die Traumballaden, die Mariah groß gemacht haben: "Love takes time" einfühlsam kuschlig, "I don´t wanna cry" dann eher verzweifel-tragisch beweisen eindrucksvoll die erstaunliche emotionale Wandlungsfähigkeit Careys. Tja, sie blies alles davon, was bisher an der Spitze gewesen war - Amerika, kurze Zeit später die ganze Welt wurden süchtig nach den Produktionen der Amerikanerin. "Mariah Carey", ein selbstbewusstes, frisches, wandlungsfähiges Album mit erstklassiger Produktion und perfektem Gesang legte den Grundstein für eine unvergleichliche Karriere. There´s got to be a way - Mariah Carey found it! (Rene´Freudenthal) Mariah Carey zeigt gleich mit ihrer ersten CD, welche stimmlichen Fähigkeiten sie besitzt. Sei es in einem mitreißenden Popsong à la „Someday" oder in einer gefühlvollen Popballade à la „Love takes time" - Mariah Carey hat sich zurecht einen oberen Platz in den Top Ten der heutigen Popdiven gesichert. (...) Wenn man sich Mariah Careys Debüt Album anhört, dann lässt sich schon erahnen, dass diese Frau einmal zur erfolgreichsten Künstlerin der 90er Jahre avancieren würde. Schon der erste Song "Vision Of Love", der auch gleichzeitig die aller erste Single war, haut einen um. ... Vor allem bei den schnelleren Stücken hört man, dass die 80er noch nicht lange vorbei waren, als diese CD produziert wurde. Das macht sie aber nicht zu schlechten Songs. Die meisten vermögen auch heute noch zu gefallen. (zitiert aus Reviews bei amazon) Ihre jugendlich forsche, gleichwohl kräftig gospelgetünchte Stimme erinnert nicht selten an Whitney Houston. Dieser Umstand dürfte mitverantwortlich dafür sein, daß Mariah Carey aus dem Stand die amerikanischen Charts eroberte: Kraftvolle Message-Swinger wie 'There's Got To Be A Way' sind genau der Stoff, aus dem auch die prüde Whitney ihre Hits schneidern läßt. Mariah schneidert als Co-Autorin allerdings durchweg selbst - und teils mit besseren Resultaten." (ME)
